Business Development Team Manager

Seeking a highly motivated and experienced Business Development Team Manager with a proven track record in the energy sector, preferably within renewables, to lead our sales team and drive customer acquisition. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in managing sales teams, negotiating Power Purchase Agreements (PPA), and developing strong relationships within the mining and industrial sectors.

 

This individual will be responsible for creating and executing sales strategies, closing deals, and ensuring the sales team's overall performance. The role requires independent work capability and strategic leadership to expand the company's footprint in Southern Africa's energy market.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Customer Acquisition: Develop and implement strategies to attract and secure new customers in the energy and renewables sector, with a focus on mining and industrial markets.

  • Deal Process Management: Lead customers through the entire deal process, from initial engagement to deal closure, ensuring smooth negotiations and positive outcomes.

  • Sales Team Leadership: Manage, mentor, and motivate a high-performing sales team, ensuring alignment with company goals and delivering consistent results.

  • Sales Strategy & Execution: Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive sales plans and tactics to meet company targets and enhance market penetration.

  • Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) Negotiations: Lead negotiations of PPAs with key stakeholders, demonstrating a deep understanding of commercial and legal aspects.

  • Client Relationship Management: Leverage an extensive network within the mining and industrial sectors to grow the company’s customer base and nurture long-term partnerships.

  • Performance Tracking & Reporting: Monitor sales performance, ensure targets are met, and provide regular reports on team and individual performance.

  • Market & Competitor Analysis: Stay informed on market trends, competitor activities, and regulatory developments to adapt strategies and remain competitive.

 

Key Requirements:

  • 15-20 years of experience in sales, with at least 5 years managing a team of sales professionals.

  • At least 5 years’ experience in the energy sector, with a strong preference for candidates with renewables sector experience.

  • Proven experience in negotiating and closing Power Purchase Agreements (PPA).

  • A strong track record of success in business development, deal closing, and team management.

  • Sector Expertise: Deep understanding of the energy industry, particularly within renewables, and a well-established network within the mining and industrial sectors.

  • Sales Leadership: Demonstrated experience in leading and motivating a sales team, with the ability to develop and execute sales strategies that meet or exceed targets.

  • Negotiation Skills: Strong negotiation skills with a history of successful deal closure.

  • Customer Book: A large existing book of customers in the mining and industrial sectors.

  • Work Style: Ability to work independently, self-motivated, and results-driven.

  • Location Flexibility: Must be willing to work from either Durban or Johannesburg and travel as required.​
